Probation Department should move

Many of us have been watching the progress of the building at Commercial and Pine streets in Nevada City. The original emotional concept was to replace exactly what was there in the name of history and the fire.

I understand the Probation Department wants to occupy the space on the second floor, as before. Their temporary quarters on New Mohawk seems to me a far better building and location. Other Nevada County functions are already near there. We really don’t need more county buildings in the center of downtown Nevada city. Parking is a premium, and the Probation Department uses a great amount of it.

This is a good stage in the construction of the new building to make a change. Complete the concrete second floor, cut the steel structure off the top of the Pine Street face, then build living quarters in a Victorian style on top of the new floor. The roof line will be more attractive and it would increase the affordable living quarters in the town, which is in keeping with the new philosophy of living quarters over businesses.

Friar Tuck’s and the Herb Shop could be as before, and the whole thing would look better and be used in a much more constructive manner in the downtown area of the city.
