Preventable deaths

The sad event of shooting CHP officer Scott is the seventh such tragic death within a few months in California. While District Attorney of Nevada County I prosecuted a similar incident and received a first degree murder conviction. At that time, and since, I have joined others in a crusade to end the practice of only one officer in a patrol car. It seems the State has other ways to spend money.

Many letters to The Union have asked for more patrolling on busy roads. While this might be fine, we should protect our officers first with a two man in every car rule, and attempt to persuade our governor and legislature to fund CHP in a way to protect officers and drivers.
