President Bush’s boasting troubling

I was horrified to hear President Bush boasting about the suspected terrorists that we have already killed. He says that every night he sleeps like a baby while he pushes for a war that will mean death and suffering for hundreds of thousands of people.

It reminds me of his almost gleeful pride when he talked about the record number of executions he presided over in Texas. Contrast this to the thoughtfulness and soul-searching we saw with the Kennedy administration during the Cuban missile crisis when nobody could sleep. Consider the brave commuting of death sentences by the Republican governor of Illinois when he saw that innocent people were being killed.

When we are considering taking away life from others, we must not do so lightly or hatefully, lest we become like our enemy. Violence and hatred hiding behind the words God and patriotism are still violence and hatred. I pray that all of us will root out our own hatred, violence and prejudice so that we can affirm the common link of humanity and the sacredness of life.
