Postal problem is ludicrous

It’s a shame that it’s taken a violation of people’s voting rights to bring the scam of the post office’s “local” mail drop slots to the attention of the general public.

Some two or three years ago I placed a card to my mom through the “Grass Valley only” slot at the post office the Friday before Mother’s Day.

Now, with her post office box some 50 feet away from the drop slot, you’d think it would’ve been placed in her box by the end of the day, or at the latest Saturday, wouldn’t you? It did”t show up until Monday.

I filled out a complaint card, and was stunned to hear from the station manager that all I’d done was help the post office staff sort their mail for them, that my mom’s “local” card had gone all the way to Marysville and back, resulting in a late delivery. There’s absolutely no logical reason for any Grass Valley addressed mail, placed in the “Grass Valley only” slot at the Grass Valley post office to ever leave Grass Valley!

Now, even though they may not all have been put through the “local” slot, over 200 absentee votes in this latest election have been invalidated because they were shipped off to Marysville, and arrived back too late. Who’s to say that the close Nevada City treasurer’s race, decided by four votes, has not now been made a farce, through the use of that city’s same “Nevada City only” drop slot? How many votes affecting that contest have now been invalidated due to this ludicrous system?

Don’t do the post office’s work for them. I encourage everyone to complain to the post office about this scam, and stop using the “local” mail slots until we’re assured the mail really stays local!
