Poor Lovett decision

Gary H. Quehl

The supervisors’ decision to turn control of the Lovett Recovery Center over to a Placerville agency rather than our own Community Recovery Resources defies logic and political insight.

CORR has become our county’s most effective organization in assisting people to emerge from the quagmire of addiction. Indeed, if comparison with other alcohol and drug treatment agencies elsewhere is the yardstick, CORR has become one of the finest in the field-second to none.

Equally troubling is the appearance that the supervisors based their decision on the recommendation of a citizen’s advisory panel, not fully qualified to make judgments about the complexities of social and behavioral approaches to treatment. The political end game seems to have had more to do with short-term financial expediency than investing in a program that has long-term benefits for our county.

It is a shame that CORR has been denied the opportunity to mount a truly comprehensive program that serves both women (their Hope House) and men (their proposal for the Lovett Center). Whether now or at some future date, we will all – one way or another – pay for the supervisors’ decision.
