Political letters: let all of us be heard

To provide an opportunity for as many readers as possible to express opinions about candidates and issues in the Nov. 5 election, we?ve established some special policies for election related letters to the editor. The policies will go into effect at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m.

Any political letters after that time will be limited to 100 words. They must be signed, and a telephone number and address must be provided to verify the writer?s identity. (We don?t publish the phone numbers or addresses.)

Each letter writer will be limited to one letter concerning a candidate or candidates and one letter concerning a ballot issue ? no more than two letters total during the election season.

Election letters will run separately from our other letters to the editor. While we will make every effort to run all the letters that meet our guidelines, we may be required to run a representative sample of letters if the volume becomes overwhelming, which has occurred in the past.

The last day letters to the editor concerning the election will be accepted is 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24. The last day they will be published is Thursday, Oct. 31.

The last day for political advertising to run on new issues that haven?t yet arisen in a campaign is Saturday, Nov. 2.
