Grass Valley Police Department


Barry L. Schafer, 37, of Grass Valley was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement and possession of drugs without a prescription, according to police. He was booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on $10,750 bail.

Schafer, a licensed vocational nurse at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, was arrested after a hospital worker reported at 4:27 p.m. that Schafer was suspected of stealing hospital drugs, according to police.


Michael R. Bewsee, 23, of Grass Valley was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon downtown on West Main Street, according to police. His bail is $25,000.

At about 11 p.m., Bewsee allegedly assaulted another man, who went by ambulance to the hospital, according to police.

Gerrard J. Cichowicz, 33, of Grass Valley was arrested on suspicion of drug possession, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a switchblade, according to the Sheriff’s Office. His bail is $10,750.

Cichowicz was arrested after an 11:32 p.m. traffic stop on East Empire Street near Empire Mine State Historic Park, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
