Plenty of blame

Gary Bramstedt

The results are in, and 64.7 percent of respondents placed the blame for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners on the Commander-in-Chief (The Union online poll, May 10-16).

Perhaps there should have been a sixth choice as there is plenty of blame to go around. How about everyone who supported this illegal, immoral invasion?

Starting with the neocons at Project for the New American Century who advocated regime change in Iraq well in advance of 9/11; the whole administration in Washington; all the members of Congress that gave Bush the right to use military force in his “crusade,” against the wishes of their constituents. This includes Dianne Feinstein, who I voted for, and John Kerry.

Also, the media; from FOX to the “liberal” NY Times columnists William Safire, Thomas Friedman and Judith Miller, who passed on convicted embezzler Ahmed Chalabi’s misinformation as fluidly as whatever the Pentagon wanted printed. Add to that our local The Union, continuing to print misinformation in the form of opinion letters linking Iraq to 9/11, a thoroughly discredited conspiracy theory.

To all of the above, and more, I quote past comedian Oliver Hardy:

“Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten (us) into!”
