I have followed your [publisher Jeff Ackerman’s] career at The Union since your arrival. Many of your [columns] have been either entertaining or conventionally conservative. However, I have noted recently, creeping into your [columns], concern and compassion for some of the less fortunate and less affluent members of our community.

In your Aug. 3 [column] you came out strongly in support of affordable housing. You boldly attacked the NIMBYs in Western Nevada County, most of whom, like you and me, are recent arrivals, and having hunkered down in this lovely county, will fight to the death to prevent anyone else from L.A. or the Bay Area moving in.

In previous [columns] you have examined the problem of addiction, particularly methamphetamine use. You have noted the failure of the “lock-them-up-and-throw-away-the-key” approach and have advocated a more humane (and possibly more successful) approach of treatment, with support for drug-ravaged families and their children.

Such compassion for less-fortunate citizens is not becoming for a good old Nevada County resident. If you keep up this kind of editorializing you may be accused of being a L——. Consider this letter a warning. (If the worst comes to pass, you can count on me for support.)

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
