Pictures that got away

The ones that got away! Indeed!

I wish I could have taken a picture recently of a vixen (mama) fox, gray, teaching its pups in our yard the art of climbing trees. (Only gray foxes can do this.) All five pups wanted approval before going into the wild. They had been living in a den bordering the yard.

And 26 years ago, our first year on this remote ranch, the sound of a rattler in our orchard took our dedicated attention, and we did not see it ’til I noticed an orange feral cat – female – moving in extremely slow motion in a wide circle around something, and two kittens watching like statues nearby. Mama was teaching her babies how to act around a rattler. (Shouldn’t we all learn respect?)
