Peaceful citizens have always been with us

A letter writer wondered where peace protesters were when Clinton bombed Bosnia, Sudan and Somalia, and if the Peace Center acted out of anti-Republican bias.

The Peace Center itself did not exist during the Clinton administration, but citizens protested Clinton’s wars, especially the daily bombings and embargo of Iraq. Peaceful citizens energized the Nader campaign and other efforts to unseat the corrupt, war mongering two-party political system that unpatriotic corporations have imposed on us. There were 60,000 activists in the streets of Seattle protesting the WTO during the Clinton administration. Other actions in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York drew similar numbers.

Whether the press chose to report them is another matter, and the writer’s lack of information may be innocent.

The local Peace Center was formed by citizens who realize the present situation is urgent and requires an organization that can respond effectively to the menace of our corporate federal government and intelligence agencies. Most of us couldn’t tell the difference between a Republican war-monger and a Democrat war-monger if you turned them upside down.

But we are committed to working toward a peaceful, democratic society regardless of which version of Republicrat puppet gets to appear to be in charge.
