Pasties flaky in Cornwall

I would like to make a comment on your story about the “Cornish pasty” competition at the fair.

One of the judges made a comment that the pasty is not a dessert, so the pastry should not be flaky. If this judge had ever been to Cornwall, she would not dream of making that comment.

I was born in Devon, which is the only county next to Cornwall, and we spent 99 percent of our summer holidays there, so, as you can imagine, I have sampled many a Cornish pasty. Believe me, all the pasties in Cornwall have flaky pastry.

I think that the judges made the remark because that is their personal preference, which is OK, but a true Cornish pasty does have flaky pastry. I just wanted people to know, as I know this area has strong ties to Cornwall from the days that Empire Mine was open.
