Party-line voter?

In a well-reasoned July 10 editorial supporting California’s medical marijuana law, The Union decried the fact that the House of Representatives had again rejected a bill which would have protected the rights of states with such laws. Not till July 12 did The Union inform us that Representative Doolittle had voted against this bill.

This, and some of his other votes, may not reflect what the average Nevada County voter would wish of their representative. Indeed, his votes in favor of cutting off all financial support for the United Nations, and against taking even a tiny step curbing the abuses of corporations employing offshore tax havens to dodge U.S. taxes (while benefitting from U.S. tax-supported bank loan guarantees – The Union, July 19 vote summary), clearly even went against the grain of very many fellow Republican congressmen. Yet, if the Republican majority in our county votes automatically along strict party lines, Mr. Doolittle is a shoo-in for reelection.

The Union provides the information which all voters should utilize to determine if our present representative is voting the way you would wish him to. Now is the time to stay well-informed.
