Other Voices: Making a difference in students’ lives

This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to participate in two fundraisers to benefit and honor two programs that are near and dear to my heart: Nevada Union and basketball.

Through the brainstorming of Dan Castles and the footwork of his wife Joanne, retired Air Force pilot Brian Shul was able to visit Grass Valley and share tales of his experience flying the SR-71, the fastest, highest flying aircraft ever.

To be sure, Brian’s stories were captivating and inspiring, but just as noteworthy is the commitment that the Castles’ have demonstrated to Nevada Union. Their orchestration of SCRIP programs, marquees and golf and basketball tournaments are but a few of the ways that the Castles have shown their devotion to our community.

On Sunday, I participated in the “Shoot for Christian” 3 on 3 Basketball tournament organized by Jason and Jennifer Craig. The tournament was born out of the Craigs’ tragic loss of their son to a car accident. Christian held a deep love for the sport of basketball and as a way to memorialize and honor him, his parents have organized a tournament that benefits their son’s favorite programs: the basketball team and his church group.

Time and time again, I am awed by Nevada County residents’ willingness to step up and do something positive for no other reason than a desire to see students succeed.

Nevada Union would not be half of what it is today without the infrastructure and support from so many in the community.
