Open letter to President Bush

Dear President Bush,

As a citizen concerned about the environment and housing sprawl, I urge you to support an appropriation of $750 million for international family planning programs for fiscal year 2006 and hope that you will continue to increase U.S. foreign assistance as part of the administration’s focus on poverty and global development.

Please support increases in family planning funding for the Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) for fiscal year 2006. These critical programs slow the speed of population growth – the fundamental driving force behind much of the environmental destruction we see today.

From suburban America to the edge of the rain forest, rapid population growth exacerbates many environmental problems, including air and water pollution, loss of wildlife habitat, fisheries depletion and climate change – global problems that transcend national boundaries. Even something as simple as our favorite songbirds not returning from their migration to South America (or vice versa) is an indicator of what is being lost.

Please make a long-term investment to protect clean water, clean air and wild places, for this and future generations, by supporting $750 million for family planning programs for fiscal year 2006. It’s worth the investment.
