Open house benefit for church restoration

The Smartsville Church Restoration Fund, Inc. will have an open house from noon to 4 p.m. June 2 on the church grounds to benefit restoration of the old Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception, which will be used as a community center.

Free guided tours of the church will be given by local historian and committee vice president Fred Bunge. The Rough and Ready Fruit Jar Pickers Band will provide entertainment from 1 to 2 p.m.

An original church pew (or two) will be auctioned after the band’s performance. Raffle tickets will be sold for a number of prizes. Food, drinks, crafts and T-shirts will be sold to raise money for structural repairs in preparation for a new roof.

The church is about 12 miles west of Grass Valley off of Highway 20; watch for road signs indicating the turnoff to Smartville.

For information on this and upcoming activities at the old Smartville church, call Kit Burton at 743-0413 or Jane Waskiewicz at 639-1682, or go to
