On Drew Bedwell

It really is all about power – over your own actions

In response to Drew Bedwell’s comments about the outcome of the District 3 supervisor’s race at the county election office on November 12th…”It’s all about power and control.” May I respond by quoting eminent writer Elie Wiesel …” The only power to which man should aspire is that which he exercises over himself.”

Creative thinking needed

Still in limbo, we continue to be hopeful that our preferred candidate will win the District 3 supervisor seat. Before anyone knows that they have lost, what a great opportunity for candidates and constituents to look toward resolving polarization and contention. (“Bedwell begins mending fences,” Nov.14.)

Of course, everything will be a “majority decision” as Bedwell is quoted as saying. That’s politics. And to mend polarization we need good listening, creative thinking, and right action.

Perhaps a place to start is to balance all the talk of public rights and private rights with inspired thoughtfulness about collective responsibility for the common good – for all those of us who are privileged to enjoy these glorious autumn colors now, and for all the great, great grandchildren who will grow up here in the future.

“Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, that wants it down. . . . ‘Good fences make good neighbors.'” May we respectfully find the balance.
