The Sons of Norway invites you to its annual smorgasbord brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday in the Senior Center at the fairgrounds. Authentic Scandinavian open-faced sandwiches, salads, desserts and beverages will be served for a $10 donation, children under 12 are $5. Sons of Norway supports local charities. Grass Valley Friends and the Mountain Stream Meditation Center are holding a benefit yard sale for Mulakuku Health Clinic in Nicaragua, Interfaith Food Bank and Interfaith Ministry, and the Mountain Stream Community Service Program. The Penn Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is offering two courses at the Penn Valley Fire House. First Aid Basics will be taught from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 14 and Adult CPR from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 16. Tomorrow is the last day to pay and enroll. The cost of each class is $35. The Father Phelan Golf Classic, hosted by Knights of Columbus, is Sunday at Beale Air Force Base. Proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity and Sierra Adoption Services. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., with the Shotgun Scramble format beginning at 12:30 p.m. The $75 donation includes green fees, cart, prizes and dinner at the Beale AFB Officer’s Club. Hospice of the Foothills is hosting a gala dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Alta Sierra Country Club to raise funds for the Home for Hospice. Tickets are $100 per person and include champagne cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and a gourmet five-course dinner with wine. Call 272-5739 for tickets.

The American Red Cross is offering the California child care course for day care providers. The classes will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and meet the California state requirements for child caretaking skills and provider licensing. Class fee is $90. SPIRITFEST, a musical and visual celebration to benefit SPIRIT Mental Health Peer Empowerment Center, will be from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. The BriarPatch Co-op Community Fund will give $250 grants to four local nonprofit organizations: Food Bank of Nevada County, Woolman Semester at Sierra Friends Center, Tall Pines Nursery School and Sierra Nevada Deep Ecology Institute. Grant checks will be given to representatives of each organization at 3 p.m. Sunday at the BriarPatch Harvest Fair, held in the store’s back parking lot at 10061 Joerschke Drive in Grass Valley.

Moms on the Mountain’s benefit hike will take place Saturday. The MOM’s hike provides financial support for art and technology programs within the Nevada City School District. The event is open to women 18 and over. Registration is free, but participants must raise a minimum of $50 in sponsorships in order to participate. Veterans residing in Nevada, Placer and Sierra counties are invited to attend and participate in this year’s Veterans Standdown from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Counseling, employment and training assistance, medical screening and legal advocacy, as well as food, clothing and comradeship will be provided at no cost to veterans.
