No opposing views to gays

Great hatchet job, Ms. Birhanemaskel (“Locals react to Bush’s speech,” The Union news story, Jan. 22). In her anti-Bush column, she got the opinions of two gay activists re same-sex marriage, but no opposing opinions.

One said gays are denied equal rights; not true. Actually, current laws give them special rights other do not enjoy. As to marriage being a religious issue – nonsense. Marriage is not conveyed by any church, but by the state which issues the license. This social contract has kept societies healthy and strong for centuries, regardless of religious philosophies.

Then she quotes one saying that Bush has failed as president, but offers no specific or alternative plans. As to letting faith-based organization’s help in rehab work, their work and results speak for themselves. She quotes only one person, Tony Gilchrease, as favoring Bush’s job performance.

Birhanemaskel has learned well from her boss, Richard Somerville. He has told me personally that all opinion letters to The Union should be respected. I fully concur. But he makes no case for his search far and wide to find op-ed pieces to validate his own biases, such as The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, Colo., the Anniston Star of Alabama (Jan. 22), etc. These are hardly local community views.
