Nevada Union students win medals

Several Nevada Union High School students in the 49er Regional Occupational Program won gold and silver medals recently at the 2003 Skills USA/VICA competition in Sacramento.

California Association of Skills (Skills USA) – Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is a national organization that serves high school and college students as well as professional members enrolled in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations.

Before competition, students developed resumes, cover letters and portfolios and presented work samples to members from local industry during interviews.

The actual competition consisted of hands-on work pertaining to students’ individual career fields.

49er ROP graphics communications instructor Terry Mott reported that Nic Ratel won the gold medal in advertising design. Nick McGill, Justin Peterson and Mike Happs won gold medals in Web page design. In the job interview category, Nick McGill won a silver medal.

Other winners from Nevada Union were: Joe Shattuck, gold medal in stick welding; Adam Litke, silver medal in stick welding; Matt Hawkins, gold medal in mig welding; and Tyler Hickox, silver medal in combo welding.
