Nevada County jurors can relax in lounge

Between listening to testimony, jurors in Nevada County Superior Court will have a place nearby to relax their attention spans.

The courthouse now has the first jury lounge in county history, county officials announced Friday.

The newly renovated, first-floor room was the long-time home of the Public Defender’s Office, which has since moved to Main Street in Nevada City.

Now the office features coffee, a microwave oven, chairs and sofas.

Jury Commissioner Michelle Oliver said the first jurors to use the room raved.

“When you consider that a courtroom break can last as long as three hours, a room like this meets a real need,” she said.

“I want this and jury service itself to be a pleasant experience.”
