Nevada City vandalism comments right on

Steve Cottrell’s letter with concerns about petty theft and damage is right on. As a resident on the Spring, Mill and Factory streets side of town, just a block south of Broad Street, right near where Councilman Cottrell lives, there have been petty thefts and petty antics going on for years. Problem is, it’s the same old people pulling the same old petty antics.

The key word here is PETTY. Street people hang around the Pine Street Market and the park area next to Broad Street Furnishings. Wally, the owner of the Pine Street Market, is far more tolerant of the petty antics than any of the shop owners on Broad Street. Keep in mind the street people spend their petty allowances at this market.

We residents just put up with these antics. These antics include theft of potted plants on porches, items left in automobiles (i.e., sunglasses, baseball mitts, change left in an ashtrays), dog poop smeared on porches and cars, and beer cans and bottles left on private lawns. (These are my personal experiences.)

In my opinion, Police Chief Trovato and his staff do a good job. I have never felt unsafe living here. I suspect that Councilman Cottrell would like to see the “screws tightened up a little,” so to speak.
