NC redesign a whim

The Union editorial of March 14, “Government by whim …” got it just right.

The next day’s article, “Foundry windows OK’d …” would have one think the Nevada County Planning Commission read and took to heart The Union’s admonition about not ruling by subjective whimsy. Unfortunately, the article did not “get it right.”

What really happened was that, once again (the fourth expensive effort), the NCPC rejected the architecturally rendered designs: drawings that had been approved by state historical architectural experts.

What was “approved” by the commission was a suggested design by commission member Laurie Oberholtzer. Unfortunately, Oberholtzer’s ideas do not facilitate the desired interior results; the ones that drive the exterior changes.

Miners Foundry Cultural Center has been trying for years to complete the transition from a working foundry to the highly used community facility that it has become. These modifications, to more fully allow the use to which it has gracefully and beautifully transitioned, are not whim or ego. They are practical, functional and historically acceptable to the aforementioned experts. The subjective whimsy to which the Foundry board, and the expensive professional assistance they have retained, is being subjected is disheartening and a poor use of volunteer efforts and funds. It should stop.
