NC permit denial defended

This is in response to The Union editorial of Jan. 15 relative to the Nevada City Planning Commission’s denial of a permit for a mini-mart/delicatessen at the gas station in the downtown Historic District. The commission concluded that such a use in addition to the gas station activity would create a major traffic and safety hazard at this already busy location.

I was further concerned that such use directly across from Calanan Park would create a new center for loiterers and/or drifters to hang out, a problem previously alleviated by the renovation and stabilization of the park. I strongly believe our residents and visitors deserve a feeling of safety when they spend time in our downtown.

The majority of the Planning Commission agreed on these points and the City Council has upheld their decision.
