Leslie Smith of Nevada City lists her top 10 reasons to enter the Nevada County Math and Science Expo.

1. It’s fun!

2. To find out the answer to a question about the world around you.

3. To learn how to think how a scientist thinks.

4. To be creative.

5. The possibility of making a great scientific discovery!

6. To challenge yourself.

7. Your teacher/parents are making you do it.

8. To earn the respect of your peers.

9. It looks good in your college portfolio.

10. To earn a ribbon and win prize money.


Smith is the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools’ science coordinator. The Nevada County Math and Science Expo is March 16 to 19, from noon to 5 p.m. each day, at the Imaginarium on Nevada City Highway. It is open to all grade levels, with those in grades 6 through 12 competing for $4,000 in prize money and the chance to reach the California State Science Fair in May.
