Glenn Ellison of Grass Valley, a 50-something musician who’s been playing in front of audiences for about 30 years, currently plays banjo with the Fruit Jar Pickers. He likes a wide range of music, and offers a list of his favorite types.

1. Bluegrass. I like a lot of them: Nickel Creek, J.D. Crowe, Ricky Skaggs, Bill Monroe.

2. Country and western: Ellison played bass for about 20 years with his father, Dusty Ellison, who headed a country band called Dusty Ellison and His Band of Gold. The band played everything from old Bob Wills stuff, pop, blues.

3. Blues: B.B. King’s gotta be one of the top ones.

4. Jazz: I’m not really particular about who I listen to. Everything from straight jazz to some of the more modern stuff.

5. Oldies: What I call oldies is the old ’60s rock ‘n’ roll. The old Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival.

6. Easy listening: Ella Fitzgerald. That kind of stuff.

7. Celtic: A few months ago, we went down to the old Irish Festival in San Francisco.

8. Old-timey: I like the old-time kind of country. Appalachian claw-hammer banjo.

9. Classical: It’s one of those you gotta kind of be in the mood for. Bach, Beethoven. I get into that once in a while.

10. Rhythm and blues: That goes back into the old R&B. Late ’50s, early ’60s.
