Museums slate Discovery Day

Interested in the Gold Rush? The Donner Party? Railroading in early California? The history of skiing in western America?

Exhibits on these and other subjects are open May 4, as the museums of Nevada County host the first Nevada County Museum Discovery Day.

Hours are 10 a.m to 4 p.m. and admission is free. Participating museums include:

— Grass Valley: Empire Mine State Historic Park, Grass Valley Museum, Grass Valley Video History Museum, North Star Powerhouse, Mining and Pelton Wheel Museum.

— Nevada City: American Victorian Museum and Teddy Bear Castle Museum, Foley Library for Historical Research, Firehouse No. 1 Museum, Imaginarium of Nevada County, Searls Historical Library.

— Other areas: South Yuba River State Park at Bridgeport, Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park at North Bloomfield, Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, Western SkiSport Museum on Donner Summit.

Discovery Day also features a preview of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, scheduled to open in Nevada City this summer.

The day is sponsored by the museums and county Joint Chambers of Commerce.
