Mural should look ahead

I was quite surprised to learn that the Del Oro Mural Committee has chosen John Pugh’s design. I was certain committee members would take the uncontroversial route and put up some charming pastoral scene, rather than evoke another rebate like the one that raged when the original mural had to be painted over.

So here’s three cheers to the committee for choosing something dynamic, unique, and modern. I, for one, think that change can be good for a place. In any case, it’s inevitable. I think John Pugh’s design reflects a complex vision of the present, a present in which we acknowledge that our history is rife with both glory and destruction and in which we must protect our dearest treasures in the face of intense pressure to develop, grow, and exploit the beauty of this place.

John Pugh seems to me to be an artist who can express this complexity in a stunning and beautiful way. I’m ready for Nevada County to get over the Gold Rush anyway – it’s the 21st century, folks. Let’s make room for a talented artist to help show us the way forward.
