More letters about North Star House
I hope the Board of Supervisors will vote to continue funding of the North Star preservation project on May 25. Most of the funds are from the state, and it seems appropriate to spend them on something that is of statewide importance.
The North Star House and everything associated with the mine are of such importance. The mine was one of the most productive in early California and helped build Grass Valley and the state with its wealth.
How visionary we will be if we can add the North Star House to our inventory of public historic sites. We must keep adding to this inventory as important sites become available to purchase before it is too late. The North Star House needs our attention now.
The potential for special events, meetings, weddings, history interpretation, and just as a wonderful place to visit frequently in its park like setting will equal the Empire Mine State Park. We will be proud to know we had a hand in preserving her.
I hope everyone will let our Board of Supervisors know how much support there is in the community for the preservation of the North Star Mine House.
This fabulous house and grounds will equal the beauty and importance of the Bourne cottage at the Empire Mine when the renovation is complete.
Volunteers, including myself, have been working in our free time to rehabilitate the house and grounds with the help of funds from a bequest to the county and state Proposition 40 and Proposition 12 grant funds which the county disburses. I understand that the county is considering discontinuing these grant funds. Please join me in urging the board to continue the funding of this important project.
It is important for the Board of Supervisors to continue supporting the renovation of the North Star House using state grant funds from Proposition 40. The North Star House project has caught the interest and enthusiasm of the many volunteers who have already begun the process of reclaiming the house and grounds.
The renovation process itself is a valuable educational asset. From the nuts and bolts of renovation to a chance to contribute to the cultural history of our county, the project provides a perfect learning opportunity for many students and teachers of Bear River High School as well as community service opportunities for all students in Nevada County.
Please support this priceless piece of our past and demonstrate to the young people of Nevada County a commitment to preserving the cultural, economic and architectural history of our community.

The North Star House, or the Julia Morgan House as I like to call it, is a Nevada County treasure. I had the good fortune to work on this masterpiece on behalf of the Nevada County Land Trust last fall. We did the emergency work to save the structure from damage done by the weather. We did essential structural repair and put a new roof on “The House.”
This wonderful home shows the bold design of Julia Morgan, coupled with the “Quaker Simplicity” of Mary Hallock Foote. The home was built for the North Star Mine’s superintendent, Arthur Foote, and his wife, Mary Hallock Foote. Mary was an author, editor and the inspirational part of the client’s contact with Julia Morgan.
We are fortunate that the new owner of the North Star property, Sandy Sanderson, gave the North Star House and surrounding property to the Nevada County Land Trust and that the Land Trust with our support is willing to make this property into a truly inspirational public property for all of us.
