Memories of S.O.S

Recently, while visiting my daughter in Penn Valley, I was shown a recipe she had been saving from your Oct. 17 edition. It was by retired Col. George Grayeb and titled “Co. A, 20th Infantry Award – Winning S.O.S.”

Little did my daughter know how familiar I was with this concoction. I was assigned to this very company for basic training at Fort Ord in 1955.

If my memory serves me correctly, rumor had it among us recruits that this dish must be at least partially responsible for this proud old regiment’s nickname of “Sykes’ Regulars.”

It’s certainly a small world.
