Man injured in motorcycle crash

A man on a motorcycle was injured Friday when he apparently drove off the roadway near the Nevada County Fairgrounds, according to fire and police reports.

The accident occurred near the McCourtney Road and Old Auburn Road intersection around 8:40 p.m., a fire log indicates.

J. E. Banneck, 46, apparently hit a Nevada Irrigation District valve cover when he went off the road, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Dolores Lavrador said Sunday. No other vehicle was involved.

Banneck, who lives near Grass Valley, was airlifted by Calstar helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center with severe injuries, Lavrador said. He had been wearing a helmet.

Banneck was listed in fair condition, a supervising nurse at the hospital said Sunday.

The accident remains under investigation, Lavrador said.
