Man injured in fall from cliff

A 31-year-old man was injured early Friday when he accidentally fell from a cliff off Indian Flat Road north of Nevada City, fire officials say.

The man, identified as Jesse Hutchings of Nevada City, was transported by CalStar helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center at 5:22 a.m. after a 3-hour rescue operation, fire logs show.

Hutchings was in fair condition, a supervising nurse said Friday evening.

Forty-Niner Fire District Battalion Chief David Ray said the man fell 70 to 90 feet down the cliff before landing 300 feet from a pond. He was 1,000 yards from Highway 49, Ray said.

The extrication was extremely tough, Ray said. “We had to cut a bunch of brush to get to him,” Ray said.

Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse King, who was among the officers responding to the call, described the brush as tall and very thick.

For safety reasons, Ray said, he decided to ground carry the victim to a waiting ambulance on Highway 49 across from Juvenile Hall rather than lift him up the hill.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter assisted with lighting equipment, Ray said.

The victim was with a group of people when the accident occurred, Ray added.

Theresa Thomas, who has lived on Indian Flat Road for more than 20 years, said she could not recall another fall off that cliff. People go there to star gaze and to party, she said.

Also responding were Nevada County Consolidated, Grass Valley and Nevada City fire departments.
