Man arrested while trying to evade police

When Nevada County Sheriff’s investigators tried to arrest a man near Lake Wildwood Sunday afternoon on a warrant, the suspect ran and started a short pursuit down Highway 49, which ended with him being arrested a short time later by Placer County deputies.

Roy Gault, 50, of Lakeport, was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon other than a firearm, possession of a hypodermic needle and a no-bail warrant.

The series of events began at about 1:15 p.m. on Pleasant Valley Road in Penn Valley. Sheriff’s investigators went in for the arrest, but Gault was able to allegedly evade them. Information was not available Sunday evening as to how he allegedly got away, or why authorities wanted him in custody. It was also not clear if the arrest was related to the recent rash of thefts in Lake Wildwood.

After the escape, Gault was seen driving south on Highway 49. With the help of a California Highway Patrol helicopter and Placer County authorities, Gault was stopped and arrested. He was booked at Wayne Brown Correctional facility.
