Listen to your teens, don’t just parent

It hit suddenly one day that I had a teen-ager. Motherhood has its flaws, one being denial.

I remember my daughter’s first day at kindergarten. I cried the whole time she was gone. She later greeted me with a picture she had drawn. I had no idea what it was, but proudly displayed it on my refrigerator.

Sadly, those days are but bittersweet memories.

In the evenings any attempt at conversation is short-lived because we are invaded by deafening, unintelligible noise that my daughter calls music.

On top of that, the phone rings more than at the White House. It amazes me how she can answer it before we even hear it ring.

Amazingly, she manages to get her homework completed in spite of every electronic device going in the house.

All joking aside, nothing prepares you for the heartbreaking, bitter words that come out of her mouth, nor the heart-wrenching feeling of being told she hates you.

I realize full well that teen-agers are self absorbed, social conscious individuals whose main priority is how they look at school.

There are a lot of troubled teen-agers in Grass Valley. My daughter says I never listen, just parent. Perhaps if we accepted them as they are and listened to what they had to say, it may make a difference. They are our future. For whatever it’s worth, I am extremely proud of my little girl.
