Library system should live within its means

In a recent poll conducted by The Union, at your Web site, you asked, “How often do you use Nevada County libraries? At least monthly, monthly, a few times a year?” The Union ignored or failed to recognize the two additional possible answers, “occasionally or never.” So only those persons using the libraries could participate in the poll.

The end result will be flawed statistical representation. No doubt we will see this flawed representation surface during the debate over the continuance of the sales tax to fund future library projects.

I received a letter from the head librarian which said that the sales tax passed by the electorate four years ago generated additional income of $1 million a year. Are we taxpayers surprised that Nevada County wants to continue the sales tax? Are we surprised that the solemn promise to discontinue the tax after four years has some how evaporated like hot air? Did we taxpayers really believe all those responsible library people when they made this promise? If they do not honor this promise, will they cast a bad light on future county projects that desperately need temporary funding?

I say shame on you, library persons, let the funds go so that the next project may receive some support.

We taxpayers only have so much money to spend. The market is down; a lot of us have lost our jobs; a lot of us have taken a beating in the market; live within your means, library persons, show us one example of integrity within the bureaucracy of our government.
