Liberalism is cancer

Regarding “Liberal defined,” letter of Feb. 4: Amazing, truly amazing. Now I have seen it all. A self-proclaimed “liberal” uses the Declaration of Independence to justify socialism. How wrong can anyone be?

The writer prostitutes the words, “We hold these truths to be self evident that all men (and women) are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” by interpreting them to mean “that every person is adequately educated, housed, fed, employed and provided medical care … and that each of us … has an obligation to see to it that this is what our government does.”

Sorry, but as one with an M.A. in U. S. history and political science, that was not the intention of our founding fathers. Fact. And no matter how hard your leftist faction tries, with your fuzzy rationale, you can’t opinion it otherwise.

Our government was never intended to be everything to everyone.

The Soviet Union and Block allies tried that for 70-plus years and it failed, miserably.

Freedoms, individual initiatives and the pursuit of happiness won. Governments can’t supply it.

Liberalism, the cancer in a free America.
