Liberal hypocrisy

John McDonald’s Other Voices column of June 25 (“Let’s take a stand against the Patriot Act”) was a classic example of liberal hypocrisy.

Mr. McDonald opens his piece by stating that the Bill of Rights is in imminent danger because of implementation of the Patriot Act. I might ask where Mr. McDonald’s constitutional anxiety was when Bill Clinton spent eight years trying to gut the Second Amendment – which, the last time I check was also part of the Bill of Rights.

The (Democrat-controlled) California Legislature has been enacting illegal anti-gun laws for over a decade, and I can’t recall ever hearing anyone from the left speak out against it. Mr. McDonald says he hopes that opposing the Patriot Act will not become a “partisan battle.” Hasn’t the assault on the Second Amendment been partisan from the beginning?

I would suggest that if the liberals wish to be taken seriously on this issue, they stop defending only those liberties that fit their agenda. Try (for once) operating on principle, rather than a transparently biased ideology.

I can only conclude that left-wing opposition to the Patriot Act is nothing more than another lame attempt to undermine the Bush administration.
