Why buy an animal at the county fair?

The 2013 Nevada County Fair is coming! Please plan on coming by the Livestock Auction ring on Sunday, Aug. 11, starting at 7:30 a.m., to support the youth of your community! It’s not too early to start planning now.

The FFA and 4H-ers have been working hard on their market projects and are looking forward to exhibiting and selling at the fair.

By purchasing an animal, you are helping a Nevada County youth member learn lifelong skills including responsibility, accountability and money management. Their projects can provide them with a foundation in academic and technical skills necessary for career and personal success. The sale of an animal is an authentic assessment of knowledge, skills and abilities, with the profits going for college savings, investment in future projects or other personal financial goals.

How can it benefit you? Your purchase will help support a unique educational program for agriculture. These youth exhibitors are learning to produce food for your table. You will receive high-quality meat raised in Nevada County, good advertising, plus the personal satisfaction that you are investing in and promoting our youth in numerous fields of higher education and careers. If you can’t use the meat, present packaged meat to your best customers, use it in a promotional campaign, put on a barbecue for employees or donate all or part of the carcass to your favorite charity and deduct it from your income tax.

If buying a whole animal is too much, “split buy” with a family member, friend or business group, or let us help you find a buying partner. Additionally, you can always resale the animal. If you choose this option the processing facility will automatically purchase the animal back from you at market value. You only need to pay the difference between the final bid price and the resale or market price. Many businesses prefer this option as it allows them to support our program and enjoy the advertising benefits, even if they don’t utilize the meat.

How do you become a buyer? It’s easy! You can sign up at the fair office prior to sale day or sign up the morning of the sale starting at 7:30 a.m. at Whitney Pavilion. You will get free parking and free entry to the fair the day of the auction. You will also be able to choose who will custom process your meat.

We look forward to seeing you at the Nevada County Fair, supporting our local youth in agriculture! Thank you!

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
