Warren Knox: Fewer fire works incidents thanks to task force

The July 4th holiday is one of my favorites of the year. But in the middle of this drought, with temperatures soaring, the potential for that celebration to spark more than fun was very high.

Last year, these celebrations created 80 fireworks related incidents that strained our local emergency services. These incidents create a significant danger to our community, and reduce the ability of emergency services to respond to more serious calls.

For this year, a task force of local agencies worked to pro actively educate the public on the extreme dangers associated with fireworks, and launch joint efforts for efficiently responding to incidents. Agencies involved were: Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada City Police Department, Grass Valley Police Department, California Highway Patrol, United States Forest Service, CalFire, California State Parks, Grass Valley Fire Department, Nevada City Fire Department, Penn Valley Fire District, and California State Fire Marshal’s Office.

I would like to personally thank the folks in these organizations for their hard work on our behalf. I would also like to thank our community for responding in such a positive way.

We had a 75 percent reduction in incidents over 2014; hoorah!
