Ward Thompson: Impeach Obama? Think again

Suggesting impeachment of President Obama is intriguing for the same reason that it is impracticable: the 22nd amendment.

If Obama is voted out of office, not only would Joe Biden succeed him, but with less than two years left of the term, the 22nd Amendment would make Biden eligible to become the first person since FDR to serve as president for more than eight years! Rather than vie for an open office next year, both the Republicans and Hillary would have to face an incumbent president who, if re-elected each time, would not constitutionally become a lame duck until 2021.

The same possibility was likely a factor in the Republicans’ convenient inability to convict Bill Clinton when he was impeached, as that would have made Al Gore a president eligible for two re-elections and lessened the chances of their taking the White House in 2000. That is not to say that those letter writers calling for Obama’s impeachment are not serious in urging a process that would result in a Biden presidency. But the Republicans certainly would not want that, so the idea is a non-starter.
