Veterans plaques vandalized

As many of you know, the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers placed flowers and flags on all the plaques in the Nevada City and Grass Valley communities representing our fallen heroes from Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

For the first time this year, we had a problem! The flowers and flags were removed from the Bennett Street under-crossing not once but twice. However, a good Samaritan must have found the flowers because they reappeared on the plaque, but then they were taken again for the third time by Saturday.

On Friday, we not only discovered that the flowers and flag from the Idaho-Maryland under-crossing had been removed, the flowers and flags from all three of the plaques were taken on the newly renamed Gold Star Memorial Bridge. We have always put them up the week before and left them up for the week after both Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Blue Star Mothers replaced all the missing bouquets on Memorial Day morning.

When I went to remove all the bouquets the day after Memorial Day, I discovered that the flowers on the Idaho-Maryland under-crossing were real yellow roses. It seems that another good Samaritan from Nevada County had replaced those missing flowers.

I hope that the members of the public will respect these bouquets placed on our heroes’ plaques and understand the real meaning of both Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Thank you to whoever replaced our missing bouquets on the Idaho-Maryland plaque and the Bennett Street underpass plaque.

Cindy M. McVay, president

Blue Star Mothers, Sierra Nevada Chapter No. 12
