U.S Postal Service deserves more support

A recent writer was expressing his disappointment in the United States Postal Service and his belief that we would be better served with a private company like FedEx or UPS delivering our mail.

FedEx and UPS both have a couple of major advantages over the United states Postal Service.

First and most important, their board of directors wish to see that their companies survive, so do everything they can to make it successful.

Unfortunately, congress, with a little “c” which is the United States Postal Service’s board of directors, wishes to drown the Service in a bath tub of debt and have imposed draconian constraints on the United States Postal Service that the directors of Fed Ex or UPS would never even consider much less approve.

How many boards would require funding of their company’s retirement and medical programs fifty, 50, years into the future? Many of the employees that would be covered have yet to be born.

Secondly, the board of directors of FedEx and UPS set a fee for their service that insures their company’s financial survival while congress prevents the USPS from setting a fee that is appropriate for yearly delivering 158,400,000,000 pieces of mail to 152,900,000 locations in the U.S. and it’s territories.

Some yearly postal facts:

$67,300,000,000 — 2013 revenue, in dollars.

158,400,000,000 — number of mail pieces processed.

152,900,000 — total number of delivery points nationwide.

40 — percent of the world’s mail volume handled by the Postal Service.

0 — tax dollars received for operating the United States Postal Service.

The United States Postal Service is not the problem. It is people that we elected that are running our country into the ground. Vote responsibly, not politically!
