Tom Morrissey: Hospitality House collaborates with the community

I’ve been a member of the Board at Hospitality House for two years and in that time I’ve learned a lot about the homeless situation in Nevada County and the things Hospitality House is doing to alleviate that by bringing homeless people into the circle of community caring that offers shelter, sustenance, medical care, advocacy, opportunity, dignity and hope these individuals transitioning from homelessness need.

Utah’s Place opened in December 2013, providing 54 beds, warm food and case management services to assist individuals wanting to make a change in their lives. Housing case managers have assisted 285 people into permanent houses in the last two years with a 95 percent retention rate.

Within the year Hospitality House has started a Culinary Job-Training Program at Utah’s place that not only helps with feeding shelter guests, but also teaches them a skill that they can take away and build upon to find employment and the means to get back on their feet and support more permanent housing.

Hospitality House is not only there for the homeless of Nevada County, it’s there to collaborate with the community to transition these individuals into self-sustaining members of our community.
