Tim and Peggy Smith: Hard to replace “Mr. McD”

We were dismayed to read of John McDaniel’s resignation from his position as a physics instructor at Nevada Union High School. The reasons for John’s resignation, abusive parents and an unsupportive administration, are particularly troubling.

Graduates of Mr. “McD’s” program have gone on to earn advanced degrees in science and engineering from some of the most prestigious schools, as evidenced by college pennants lining his classroom walls. His classroom is equipped with volunteer-constructed equipment as well as specialty equipment donated by industry and college programs, all in recognition of the quality of John’s physics program. Local businesses and individuals have made cash contributions to John’s program to help make the best teaching tools and supplies available to this exceptional educator.

Three of our four children were fortunate enough to participate in John’s class. They, and several of their friends, made their career decisions based on the excitement John generated and the challenges his class presented. Our family, for one, will be forever grateful for his skill and dedication as a teacher.

We wish John the best wherever life may take him. We do hope John continues teaching. His future students will be the recipients of one of the best technology programs anywhere.
