Surprised senior

Some of us who paid into Social Security all of our working life and are now receiving benefits were surprised by Rick Santorum’s speech at the Republican convention.

We didn’t know that we were receiving “government assistance.” Santorum said, “Under President Obama, the dream of freedom and opportunity has become a nightmare of dependency with almost half of America receiving some sort of government assistance.”

It turns out that his term “government assistance” includes Social Security and Medicare. I recall paying into Medicare since it was created and certainly resent Santorum’s depiction. And, by the way, almost half of America received some sort of “government assistance” under George W. as well. Take a look at

Does the constant use of terms like “entitlement” and “government assistance” to describe Social Security and Medicare bother you like it does me? Denigrating something is a good first step if you want to cut it.
