Stu Chuang Matthews: More coverage on NorCal fires, please

During this season, when we are dealing with massive regional wildfires and extremely thick smoke locally, I recently picked up The Union, which mentioned of neither on the front page. The only mention of either was an article about the wildfires from the Associated Press on page A8 and a picture of the smoky sun within the front section.

While I really do value the profiles of local businesses that often grace the front page, there are often local issues that should take precedence over these articles. At the ideal extreme, The Union would send a reporter to one of the wildfire areas to write an article. More practically, The Union could certainly feature an article about how the smoke is affecting daily life, and how to protect one’s health in these conditions.

I want to be proud of our newspaper and to feel that real, important, high-quality reporting is happening. I don’t get that feeling when the paper takes me just a few minutes to read in the morning.
