Steven Gayle: Roy Cohn no American hero

I read with dismay the editorial cartoon published in The Union on May 26, which extolled the virtue of Roy Cohn as an American “hero.” Mr. Cohn was many things, but he certainly was no hero.

His primary mark on American life came when he served as chief counsel to Sen. Joseph McCarthy during McCarthy’s tenure in Washington. Cohn — and McCarthy — were responsible for the disastrous congressional “investigations” of the 1950’s, which remain among the most shameful examples of governmental misconduct in the life of our republic.
