Shop locally? Not in this case

To finish a knitting project, I needed one more skein of yarn, so I went to a local crafts store.

When the clerk rang it up I almost fainted! One six-ounce skein of Red Heart baby yarn was $5.99 plus tax, totalling $6.48. When I stood there aghast, the clerk laughingly said, “Oh, that’s cheap. We’ve got some yarn that’s $30 a skein.”

Maybe she thought it was funny, but I surely didn’t. I bought several skeins of the exact same yarn at the Yuba City Walmart last month for $2.88 each plus tax, totaling $3.11. That means that the local store’s price was over twice the Walmart price — and we can be sure that even at $2.99/skein Walmart was making a profit!

Even the tax rate in Yuba City was less — 7.5 percent – whereas Grass Valley’s is 8.125 percent. At $6.48 per skein here I can lo longer afford to make anything for my friends. A simple afghan would cost me close to $100! If I want to make any more items, I’ll have to leave Grass Valley, for I doubt if there’s any other yarn store here that would be any better than the large craft store I went to today.

Shop locally? I think not!
