Shed some light on the real issues

Regarding “Nevada City Going Dark” in Thursday’s paper (Oct. 23), with all due respect to the council meetings and process; I’m really surprised that the lights in town are an issue worth dedicating time and resources to.

On the one hand, the elephant in the room is the transient situation that needs some serious attention … and on the other; the decision to rule that decorative shop lights downtown cannot be on other than at the holiday season seems totally ludicrous. The lights all year round are beautiful and as the owner of Matteo’s points out, indicates that a business, restaurant or shop is open.

Let’s not make it a rule to turn out the lights; and let’s put a focus on the substantive issues. We have too many transients, too many incentives to invite non-contributing individuals to our town; and not enough in place to dissuade it. That’s what visitors see — perhaps the lights going out is about keeping the real issues in the dark.
