Sara Greensfelder: Water is precious resource on the ridge

Thanks to Jenny Warden for her Feb. 28 opinion piece pointing out that there is a sustainable economy on the San Juan Ridge, and concluding that this economy is threatened by the proposed re-opening of the San Juan Ridge Mine.

It’s estimated that at peak operation, the mine would pump some 3.5 million gallons of water per day out of the ground in order to dewater mine tunnels. Five major employers/businesses on the Ridge border the mine.

Even without another catastrophic rupture of a water-bearing fracture — such as occurred in 1995, when 14 neighboring wells were impacted — the draw-down on the water table during our severe drought could spell doom for these jobs and services, including those provided by the Sierra Family Medical Clinic, Ananda Village, Extasia Jewelry, Grizzly Hill School and RCD Engineering.

Together, these employers provide some 200 jobs.

Water is our most precious resource, and should not be treated as an industrial waste product.
